Profit’s Not the Point (At First): Why You’re Missing the Mark on Business Value

May 5, 2025 | Value Growth

What Makes a Small Business Valuable?

Just because you’ve poured your life into your business doesn’t mean it’s valuable.

Sure, your time is valuable. Your equipment might be. Maybe even your name has some local pull. But when I ask, “Is your company valuable?”—I’m not asking how much you love it.

I’m asking:

  • Can it run without you?
  • Would someone pay a premium to own it?
  • Is it something an investor would actually want—or just a glorified job you’ve built for yourself?

If your goal is to build a business that creates wealth, freedom, and options… then you’ve got to shift your mindset.

You must stop chasing short-term profit and focus on long-term value.

My Wake-Up Call: When Profit Wasn’t Enough

I remember standing in my driveway, staring at my truck, wondering if I could even afford gas for the next job. I was working 80 hours a week just to avoid a 40-hour job. My landscaping company brought in revenue, but no real profit. And definitely no freedom.

I wasn’t building a business—I was trapped in one.

So I started looking for help.

Knowing Who Not to Trust

First stop: a big-name financial firm. They smiled politely and told me—without saying it directly—that I wasn’t worth their time if I didn’t already have money to invest.

Next: CPAs. They filed my taxes, cleaned up my books, but didn’t give me a single ounce of strategic insight that could actually help me scale or sell.

Then came the business coach, who had never actually owned a business. He gave me a worksheet on “vision and values” but no tactical path to growth.

I was searching for someone who understood small business at the dirt-under-the-fingernails level. Someone who could help me increase value, not just profit.

But the experts who really knew how to do that? They were too busy serving $50M and $100M companies to even notice a guy like me.

Profit vs. Value: What’s the Difference?

I started learning everything I could about building a business with real value. Not just revenue. Not just margins. Value.

I didn’t learn it from textbooks—I learned it from trenches. I made mistakes. I tested strategies. I watched what actually moved the needle in the real world.

And eventually, I discovered the question that changed everything:

Do you want to build a business that’s profitable… or one that’s valuable?

Here’s why that matters:

Take two companies:

  • One nets $300K a year, but the owner handles everything.
  • The other nets $200K, but it runs without the owner.

Guess which one an investor will pay more for?

You can be profitable without being valuable. But you can’t be valuable without being profitable.

Profit is a byproduct of value—not the other way around.

How to Build a Scalable, Sellable Business

When you focus on building a valuable business:

  • Your team starts taking ownership.
  • Your systems become scalable.
  • Your business becomes transferable.
  • Your stress begins to drop… and your options begin to rise.

You become the kind of business owner who can sell for a premium—or keep the company and let it run without you. You’re not handcuffed to the operation. You’re free.

And that’s the whole game.

The Value Gap Is Real

According to the Exit Planning Institute, 80% of business owners have no transition plan—and most of their businesses aren’t even sellable.

That’s not just a problem. That’s a crisis.

What to Do Next

Over the next series of articles and podcasts, I’m going to show you exactly how to grow the value of your business—even if you’re in a rural town, even if you’re the one still handling sales and service, even if you’ve been burned before by “experts” who don’t understand what it’s like to carry payroll stress at 2 a.m.

This isn’t theory. It’s what I’ve lived, what I’ve used to build and sell multiple businesses. And what I coach service-based business owners like you to do every day.
